We announced it a few weeks ago, and it is now official: Lewis Hamilton has extended his contract with McLaren for a period of five years. The team confirmed today that the 2007 vice world champion will remain with the British team at least until the end of the 2012 season.
The Briton had a sensational first F1 season with this same team, finishing in the World Championship just one point behind the winner, Kimi Räikkönen.
This information is therefore far from being a surprise, as the two parties reached an agreement during the off-season.
Speaking about his new contract, Hamilton stated: « It is fantastic for me that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes has extended my contract until 2012. »
« While the 2007 season was my first year in F1, McLaren-Mercedes has given me a lot since 1998. I feel that I could remain loyal to this team throughout my Formula 1 career. »
The objective is now simple: we must win the drivers’ and constructors’ championships as often as possible. We have many challenges to face, but I am 100% confident. The first of these challenges is the 2008 season, he concluded.
