Mercedes-Benz, the German manufacturer, has confirmed that Ralf Schumacher will test a DTM car this week. The main party involved, aged 32, has also acknowledged the information as accurate.
The former six-time Grand Prix winner with Toyota, who lost his seat at the end of 2007, is scheduled to drive a Mercedes C-Class, along with his fellow dissatisfied F1 driver Christian Klien, for a test in Estoril on Tuesday and Wednesday.
« Ralf has followed almost all the DTM races on television, » said Norbert Haug, Mercedes boss, to the Bild newspaper.
« As we have always said, if the contractual situation allowed it, we would be able to organize a test for him, » added the German.
Ralf Schumacher commented: « First of all, the test will be for fun, then we will see how things go and evolve.
A spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, stated on the official DTM site that despite the presence of Klien and other drivers on the Portuguese circuit, the Estoril tests are not considered a check-out where they will be evaluated for a race seat.
« The results of this test will leave the situation completely open, » he said.
