The Minister of State for Trade and Investment in the UK has called on the wealthiest individuals to invest in motorsport, particularly F1. This is with the aim of saving the Silverstone Grand Prix.
Speaking to Autosport magazine, Lord Jones believes that the government should not be the sole source of funding for the circuit, even though this motorsport represents one of the richest industries in the world.
« Politicians have a hard time justifying investing money in a circuit and for one of the richest sports in the world, » he said.
« The sector must do it themselves. But I would like to see wealthy people invest in motorsport. Do they want to die rich? Motorsport has been quite kind to them, and they should do something in return in the long term. »
Lord Jones added that without a Grand Prix, the automotive industry in Great Britain will be in free fall like in several other countries around the world.
« Silverstone is one of the important events on the F1 calendar, but if it were to disappear, in five years, you will notice that the excellence in motorsport we have today will no longer be there, » he added.
The new teams will no longer be based here, and gradually motorsport will move to other countries. This is serious!
« Anyone who says we can have an automotive industry without a Grand Prix is completely mistaken. »
