Since the 2010 season, the McLaren team has been using the wind tunnel of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe sports team. The Woking team has used the wind tunnel based in Cologne to carry out its tests.

The British stable and the Japanese team will continue to collaborate, although the parts for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri’s monoposts will no longer go through Cologne.

An open dialogue

« Our door remains open to McLaren. We wish them great success with their new wind tunnel, and although this naturally changes the services that McLaren requests from TGR-E and the frequency at which their engineers are likely to be in Cologne, we have an open dialogue and play a constructive role in the integration process of their new wind tunnel into their development program, said Rob Leupen, the director of Toyota Gazoo Racing.

The collaboration of the two teams has been a success for the Cologne factory. « We are proud to have played a role in McLaren’s Formula 1 history for such a long period of time. Establishing a relationship of trust and working together for 12 years is a sign of mutual respect between our two organizations, as well as the hard work of TGR-E and McLaren employees to make this relationship a success. We are sincerely grateful for McLaren’s commitment to us during this period », continued the endurance team director.

At the origin of success

The relationship between the two sports entities did not only stop at the use of the wind tunnel. McLaren and Toyota also shared the use of R&D and production capabilities. The team based in Woking also set up exclusive work zones in the Cologne factory with separate data systems.

For the team principal, Andrea Stella, the collaboration with TGR-E has allowed the team’s success between 2010 and now. « The support from TGR-E has been invaluable to our success. We have established a good working relationship between the McLaren team and the on-site factory personnel, with their internal capabilities in additive manufacturing and other facilities on-site being essential to the development process of our cars », says Andrea Stella.

« As we move towards the commissioning of our on-site wind tunnel, which offers significant efficiency gains to McLaren and aligns with the new structure built by the team, we would like to acknowledge that the work done with the TGR-E wind tunnel has played a crucial role in the team’s progress in the past and thank TGR-E for their invaluable support throughout this period. »
