Red Bull seemed to finish the 2007 season on a more than positive note. This is at least what the qualification suggested. And with good reason, Webber started from 5th place while Coulthard launched from the 9th position.
But in vain, as throughout the year the Austrian team suffered from reliability that was too insufficient to consistently score points. Webber will retire during this Brazilian Grand Prix and Coulthard will finish in 9th place.
David Coulthard – 9th
« I thought we could score points today, but unfortunately, I didn’t have enough speed compared to the cars that were in front of me. Nakijama towards the end of the race hit my front suspension and the car then moved strangely to the left in the last ten laps. We weren’t fast enough today. »
« I would like to thank all the team members, both for the race and for the testing, and everyone based at the factory, for all their efforts this year. This season has been challenging, it won’t be difficult to do better next year, we must look ahead, I am ready to take on the challenge and I am sure they are ready too. »
Marc Webber – withdrawal
« I had a good start and our pace wasn’t too bad, I was hoping to get some points, but not a problem from the car. It’s really unbelievable. The guys saw a disconnect between the engine and the gearbox, which was an issue we have never faced. »
« We need to study this failure a bit more in order to see exactly what happened. We were quite good at the beginning of the weekend, so it’s a real shame to end in this manner. »
Christian Horner – Director
Obviously, it was a promising start for Mark; it’s disappointing for him to have to retire so early in the race with a transmission problem. With David, we struggled with his tires. We observed him and then adjusted his strategy when it became clear he couldn’t overtake the cars in front of him. He then had a minor collision with Nakijama, which cost him significant time. It’s frustrating to have started the race on a grid largely to our advantage, only to end up with nothing.
I believe that the whole team has worked very hard this year and we have been able to observe some very positive signs in the performance of the cars during the last quarter of the season. However, we need to go further, make our adjustments over the winter, and build on the achievements of these last races to ensure a strong performance in 2008.
