The leaders of GP2, a championship that has just concluded its 3rd season, announced in a statement this morning that all 13 teams currently in the series have received an invitation to extend their contract with GP2.
According to the statement, this invitation allows the rewarding of its teams, who have been present since the creation of the championship in 2005—to take over from Formula 3—and to enable them to commit for another three years.
This invitation implied a condition. Namely, that the teams must have paid all their debts to the championship today as the final deadline. If that were not the case, new teams could replace them.
The director of the DPR team, David Price, supported the leaders’ decision: « Bruno [Bruno Michel, GP2 Director] showed his preference for the current teams, primarily to ensure that many things remain stable for 2008. We did everything to secure our future in the series… »
Indeed, 12 teams have come forward to potentially take a spot in the championship in case of withdrawal or unpaid bills. Among them, the team currently present in British F3 – Hitech Racing – has expressed its desire to be represented in GP2.
« There is no reason to lose patience. We are not on a hunt. » said David Hayle – boss of Hitech Racing.
« We will stay there, arms crossed, and see what happens. »
« I completely understand the preference for the 13 teams already present, but if there is a free spot, we will be candidates, » he admitted.
