One of the bosses of the A1GP championship – Tony Teixeira – intends, after signing a contract with Ferrari for the supply of engine and chassis in his championship, to diversify into another, more well-known motorsport.
The businessman, originally from South Africa, indeed has his sights set on a Formula 1 team with the potential to become its owner as early as 2008.
With Ferrari’s involvement in the A1GP series and their presence as an engine supplier for Scuderia Toro Rosso, the small Red Bull team could very well be the target for acquisition.
Currently owned by Red Bull and Gerhard Berger, the latter could step aside to focus on Red Bull Racing. Ferrari would therefore have exclusivity in supplying Teixeira’s single-seaters, both in A1 and F1.
« I am looking into this matter » comments Teixeira to Reuters.
« I spoke to two or three different teams that could be up for sale. Toro Rosso is indeed one of them. » He confirmed.
The South African had planned to buy Spyker if the Indian businessman, Vijay Mallya, had not preceded him.
