We announced it yesterday on our site, McLaren Mercedes will be under increased scrutiny during the Brazilian Grand Prix to ensure perfect fairness between its drivers.
And well today, McLaren congratulates the FIA on this decision to send a special observer to Brazil to ensure that nothing favors one of their drivers during the event.
This decision follows long days of controversy over an attempt by McLaren to prevent Fernando Alonso from obtaining pole position in China. The FIA announced on Thursday that it would send an observer to the race to keep an eye on the team’s activities.
« We can confirm that the FIA is in the process of appointing a special observer for the Brazilian Grand Prix, » said an FIA spokesperson to Reuters.
This, even though McLaren has already invited the head of the Spanish motorsport federation, Carlos Gracia, to the race with the team.
McLaren, however, welcomed this decision:
« We have not been informed about this by the FIA. However, if a decision is made by the FIA … we have nothing to hide, » announced a source from McLaren to the Guardian.
We recall that this Grand Prix is set to be one of the most exciting races F1 has ever seen, with maximum tension between three protagonists. Indeed, Lewis Hamilton has a slight advantage as he is only 4 points ahead of his arch-rival Fernando Alonso and 10 points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen for Ferrari, who could stir things up.
