Even though Fernando Alonso is making headlines on circuits around the world as he is still in the running for a third title, the Spaniard is making even more waves behind the scenes…

And for good reason, Alonso is at the center of a very important spiral happening behind the scenes regarding his future in the 2008 F1 season. From the most plausible rumors to the wildest ones, the driver has to face a media frenzy. The slightest hint, the tiniest piece of evidence, is the source of new rumors, and this has been going on for several weeks now.

He is announced for 2008, both at Renault, Ferrari, Toyota… And of course at McLaren Mercedes since his contract binds him to the team for another year. Faced with these speculations, the teams are reacting as best they can.

Renault remains unmoved by the speculations made by Fernando Alonso regarding a possible return of the Spaniard to the French team.

Indeed, the German newspaper Bild claimed on Thursday that the Spaniard has now signed a letter of intent to join the French team next January for three years, thus until 2010.

This news followed reports indicating that Toyota is ready to sign a record contract of $50 million per year to secure the reigning champion’s place in its ranks.

The Finnish tabloid Ilta-Sanomat added on Friday, in a preliminary report, that Alonso is considering a three-year contract with Ferrari that would take effect starting in 2009.

In a brief statement, Renault did not want to confirm or deny its interest in Alonso. He won two driver titles while he was at Renault, thus allowing the French team to dominate the constructors’ championship in 2005 and 2006.

The team will not comment on speculation that has appeared in the media. We will announce our drivers for the next season when we are ready to do so, the French team stated.

In short, we will have to wait a few more weeks to glimpse the light at the end of the tunnel. Namely, which team will Fernando Alonso spend his 2008 year with?
