As there is only one Grand Prix left for this year 2007 where the name of the champion is still a mystery, the transfer market has never been so “boiling.” The rumors it generates are even more interesting and excite the crowds and bookmakers.

The latest rumor that seems to be genuinely founded is that Fernando Alonso spoke with Renault team officials in Japan two weeks ago. According to some reports, the discussion involved the Spanish driver’s return to the French team. Worse, Alonso is said to have studied the plans for the future car scheduled for 2008 very thoroughly.

The Spanish sources that relayed this information, including the magazine Autopista, indicate that the reigning 26-year-old world champion met with Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds on the Saturday of the Japanese weekend, where they discussed the possibility of a three-year contract starting in 2008.

It is strongly believed that Renault President Carlos Ghosn is unwilling to wait an additional year for Alonso, after which he would be free to join Ferrari or another competitor for 2009. Alonso’s manager Luis Garcia Abad also attended the half-hour meeting.

The magazine also suggested that Alonso’s teammate would not be Giancarlo Fisichella, as in 2005 and 2006, because the Roman could move to Williams to take the spot vacated by Nico Rosberg, who is the front-runner to replace Alonso at McLaren Mercedes.

This raises the question of Alonso’s teammate at Renault, and we are of course talking about Heikki Kovalainen, the outgoing driver, and Nelson Piquet Jr., the regular test driver for Renault.

This transfer market is therefore far from being finalized since beyond the end of the season, there will be long months of negotiations and questions before the start of the 2008 season scheduled for March 16.
