Alexander Wurz, as we reported yesterday, has confirmed his intention to retire from Formula 1 racing through an official statement.
The Austrian who started two years ago in Montreal (Canada) with Benetton has since raced for Mercedes and for the past two years with Williams. He will give up his seat starting from the next and last Grand Prix of the season – in Brazil – but will remain a possible test driver for his team in 2008.
The 33-year-old driver and father of 3 children recently commented: « I would like to announce today my retirement as a full-time F1 driver. I also want to thank my family and of course my supporters, the entire AT&T Williams team, and my previous teams, as well as the media who supported me throughout my career. »
« In a championship as competitive as F1, I have always said that if one ever had any doubt about anything, it was necessary to stop… I started thinking this way a few GPs ago and decided that it was the right time to make an announcement. »
« The races this season have been superb, particularly during the podium in Canada. » continues the Austrian.
« I would also like to thank the team for accepting my decision, and I wish them all the best for the last race of the year. »
« I look forward to seeing my future and I might have the opportunity to pass on my knowledge and experience to others. There are some discussions ongoing. I will also be able to run for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and focus more on road safety. » He concluded.
Frank Williams, who leads the team, spoke on the subject: « Alex has made invaluable contributions to the team over the past two years, first as a test driver, then as a race driver… He has had some great races this season under difficult conditions, and we wish to thank him for his contribution. »
« Alex is well-known, popular, and highly regarded in the field. I’m sure I speak on behalf of the entire paddock in wishing him and his family a very bright future. »
To replace him in Brazil, a statement from the English team is expected by tomorrow (Tuesday), but speculations suggest Nakajima or Glock.
