Alexander Wurz, currently the number 2 driver at Williams, announced this morning his intention to leave Formula 1 after many years spent in the top category.

The Austrian also explained his decision. He made it after the Canadian GP, where, following a chaotic GP, he achieved a solid 3rd place. He even considered retiring from F1 right after that podium, but out of respect for Williams, he decided to stay until the end of the season.

Wurz has climbed onto 3 podiums since 1997 when he made his debut in Montreal, precisely where he made his last podium… After 10 years of good and loyal service, the Austrian who welcomed a new daughter a few weeks ago will not even participate in the Brazilian Grand Prix in two weeks. However, Williams has advised him to stay on as a test driver.

To replace him, several names are being considered, including Nakajima, who tests on Fridays and would arrive in the team coincidentally at the right time, as well as Timo Glock, GP2 world champion, or Piquet Jr.
