Sebastian Vettel from Toro Rosso will start the Chinese Grand Prix next weekend with a ten-place grid penalty compared to his qualifying position. The reason: An incident at the Japanese Grand Prix. Flashback.
As the safety car returns to the Fuji circuit for the second time due to Alonso’s accident, all the single-seaters that haven’t retired find themselves behind the safety car at reduced speed. The conditions were very bad, visibility was greatly reduced, and an accident occurred involving Vettel and Webber. Both were positioned within the top five. The result is immediate, both cars pull over to the side, it’s retirement.
Following this unfortunate incident, the race stewards decided to open an investigation to determine the responsibilities of everyone involved. The penalty is handed down, and Vettel is given a sanction, but it will be effective during the Chinese GP on Sunday.
After the race, Vettel stated that Hamilton braked behind the safety car, causing him to hit Webber from behind. The officials then observed the English driver’s behavior, but even with his final victory, doubts remain about his involvement in this incident.
What is certain is that Vettel’s Chinese appointment, almost a week earlier, promises to be quite challenging.
