Double world champion Fernando Alonso retired from the race at the Japanese Grand Prix at Mount Fuji after a terrible accident from which he fortunately emerged unscathed.
The rain was abundant, visibility almost nil, and the track was soaked. All these elements resulted in frequent accidents or spin-outs during this GP.
The Spaniard lost control of his car and crashed violently into a wall at the edge of the track before coming to a stop with his single-seater completely destroyed right in the path of other drivers. Fernando hurried to get out and find shelter.
The double world champion admits that it would take a miracle to catch up with Lewis Hamilton, the current leader of the World Drivers’ Championship with a 12-point lead over the Spaniard, with only two races remaining in the championship.
Alonso does not lose hope and will do everything possible to win the championship, but he knows it would take a miracle, such as Hamilton retiring or poor finishes from the Englishman in the last two races.
“I am not throwing in the towel, but unless Hamilton retires during a Grand Prix and I score the maximum points, I won’t be able to score at least 6 points more than Hamilton per race.”
“This means that I absolutely have to win the remaining two races and hope that Hamilton only finishes 5th or 6th to get back in the championship. Lewis hasn’t retired from a race yet this season, maybe it could happen in the last two Grand Prix.”
“I will do my utmost and take all the risks, the constructors’ championship is not achievable and the drivers’ championship is almost lost. I will no longer have the same pressure on my shoulders, whereas Hamilton will have to execute flawlessly. I will finish as well as possible in these last two races, hoping that a miracle will happen,” concluded the Spaniard.
