With four points to his name this season and a 16th place in the drivers’ championship, Guanyu Zhou is having a decent season, matching the performance of his car. He has even managed to beat his experienced teammate Valtteri Bottas several times in qualifying and in the race. His superb performance in Hungary, where he was placed 5th on the grid, proved that he can be very fast.

Furthermore, the Chinese driver is still waiting to be able to race in his homeland China, which should happen in 2024. However, before that, Zhou will need to have a contract in Formula 1. Renewed for one year last summer, he is now looking for a long-term contract to secure his future.

Discussions with Alfa Romeo

« Yes, of course, we have already discussed it. I leave it up to my manager to do it. But the team is satisfied with my work on the right track so far », he told Planet F1.

The signing of a new contract with Alfa Romeo seems to be on track. Let’s remember that Guanyu Zhou brings a lot to the team. He is the first Chinese driver in Formula 1 history and has great visibility in China. Money and increased media presence, that’s why Zhou is also important for Alfa Romeo.

« Yes, I would prefer to have a long contract. I’m definitely aiming for a contract of more than a year, and then keeping my options open for 2026, he clarified afterwards. A multi-year contract is worth its weight in gold in Formula 1.

Ambitions with Audi?

Everyone now knows that in 2026, Audi will take over the reins. Guanyu Zhou sees this as an opportunity in his career and perhaps a chance to evolve even further at a higher level.

« I am happy for the coming years before Audi takes over to stay here. And now, knowing that the team is transforming into a manufacturer team, there is no better place to be. » Guanyu Zhou currently has his place in the infrastructure but the hardest part will be to keep it. There will be numerous customers.

« We must see, and obviously, my priority is to stay here and go until the Audi hour because that’s where I think we will make a huge difference in the 2026 regulations with all the changes. »
