A versatile and capable AMR24 that can “compete with Red Bull,” according to Dan Fallows

Just like during the unveiling of Alpine, Aston Martin has unveiled its actual race car for the 2024 Formula 1 season. The team's technical director, Dan Fallows, took the opportunity to explain the changes featured on the AMR24, which can rival Red Bull.

The British team unveiled its new AMR24 on Monday, February 12th, at its Silverstone headquarters. Presenting its fourth car since its arrival in 2021, Aston Martin continues its development and has undoubtedly built its best single-seater with the AMR24.

First car built in the new Aston Martin Racing Technology Campus, it was presented with confidence and ambition by the leaders of the British team. Its technical director, Dan Fallows, detailed the more technical aspects of a race car that is a significant evolution from its predecessor.

« I would describe the AMR24 as a significant evolution of last year’s car, and it looks quite different with many new parts to give us a solid foundation for development,” he said. » « The chassis design is new, as well as the nose, front wing, front suspension, and rear suspension. We want to compete in the development race this season and this car is designed to do just that. »

Last year, the concept of the AMR23 lost momentum during the season, and Aston Martin saw its main competitors surpass them on the track. The main objective for this season is therefore to broaden the operating window of the AMR24 so that it performs on as many circuits as possible.

“We want a race car that is more versatile. We believe that the AMR24 offers the ideal platform for the ongoing season development,” expressed Fallows.

The technical details of the AMR24.

The current era of regulations in Formula 1 places a crucial importance on the floor and the design of the side pods. On the AMR24, a revamp of the side pods and the bodywork has been undertaken to improve the management of airflow around the floor and above the rear wing.

« The floor is the main area for generating aerodynamic downforce on an F1 car, and it is constantly evolving. Properly configuring it will be of paramount importance for our success in 2024, stated Dan Fallows.

The AMR24 will use a push-rod suspension layout both at the front and rear. The front suspension has been modified to enhance performance, while the rear suspension has been optimized to maximize airflow efficiency around the rear wing.

(D) Work has been done at both ends of the car on the suspension. The front will work more effectively alongside the front wing, and aerodynamic work has been done at the rear to optimize our setup in that area. (F), explained the British technical director, former head of aerodynamics at Red Bull.

« Red Bull is absolutely beatable »

Aston Martin approaches this 2024 season with confidence, convinced that the dominant champions of the last two seasons, Red Bull, can be caught up with. The British team started last season as the closest rival to Red Bull, and despite their drop in performance throughout the season, other teams have closed in on the Austrian team.

However, Aston Martin is now confident in its progress and in competing with Red Bull. Dan Fallows noted that all the teams will increasingly approach Red Bull by adopting their design philosophy in particular.

“When you have a team performing as well as Red Bull has since 2022, it is inevitable that there will be some convergence on their solutions,” said the technical director, who incidentally left the Austrian team to join Aston Martin.

« With the regulations we have now, it’s not particularly easy to have visually very different cars,” he explained. « So, I think it’s inevitable that we would see some convergence. »

“But there is still a lot of time left to win the race and we are adopting the approach that Red Bull is definitely beatable. We are focusing on them and that is what we are aiming for,” Fallows announced.

Last year, Aston Martin noticed that the performance of their car varied too much from one circuit to another. One of the goals of the AMR24 was therefore, as Fallows detailed above, to make it more adaptable to all circuits.
We are talking about Red Bull because they are obviously the benchmark in terms of performance. But for us, the priority is the one who has the fastest car and that’s what we are focusing on.

Instead of thinking about individual races from a technical point of view, we need to create a car capable of functioning on any circuit. And that’s really where our focus lies, creating a usable car that suits the drivers, that’s what we’ve really tried to concentrate on.

“These competitiveness statistics and the way we are closing in on Red Bull will come later. If we put this performance on the car, we give ourselves the opportunity to compete at this level, which is exactly what we want,” ambitiously concluded the technical director of Aston Martin.
