Bahrain F2 Grand Prix: Zane Maloney signs off perfect weekend
Zane Maloney, after winning the sprint race on Friday, also won the main race. He led the race from start to finish after starting from pole position. He finishes ahead of Josep Maria Marti and Paul Aron. 8 rookies are in the top 10, while the two French drivers had to retire.
Zane Maloney is off to a strong start to his F2 season. Hailing from Barbados, he wins both races of the opening weekend of the 2024 Formula 2 season. He finishes ahead of Marti (Campos) and Aron (Carlin). The safety car made an appearance after Victor Martins (ART GP) retired due to a mechanical failure. The other French driver, Isack Hadjar, also retired.
The 32 laps of the main race were led from start to finish by Zane Maloney despite a virtual safety car and a safety car.
Isack Hadjar did not have any luck today. Starting well, he was fighting for the lead when he was hit at the first corner by Gabriel Bortoleto. Campos had to retire immediately, hit once again by a car unable to avoid Hadjar spinning, Enzo Fittipaldi. This event caused a virtual safety car and then a safety car.
Victor Martins, the other French driver, struggled with a single-seater that didn’t seem as competitive as his competitors. He had to retire 15 laps before the end of the race and caused another safety car period.
In the end, out of the top 10, 8 drivers are rookies, which is a surprising proportion. O’Sullivan misses out on the podium in front of Bortoleto, who received a 10-second penalty during the race for his collision with Hadjar.
Colapinto finishes 6th, ahead of Maini, Hauger, Miyata and Mercedes prodigy Antonelli who completes the top 10.
In total, 6 drivers have retired, including French and Fittipaldi, Correa, Cordeel and Crawford.
