Japan has just hosted consecutively a Formula E ePrix and a Formula 1 Grand Prix. The last weekend of March, it was the electric single-seaters that took on a new event on the calendar held in the suburbs of Tokyo. A few days later, it was the turn of the twenty F1 single-seaters to face the legendary Suzuka circuit.

After the F1 Grand Prix won by Max Verstappen in front of Sergio Perez, the two Red Bull drivers were questioned about their views on the Electric Formula championship. The three-time world champion did not hesitate to praise the high level of competition in the championship, which is celebrating its tenth season this year.

What I love about Formula E is that there are excellent drivers. You may have raced with them in the past or already rubbed shoulders with them, so the competition is very high. Of course, several of my friends are driving there, so I always keep an eye on it, even if it’s not a category I would like to drive in the future.

Even if he is not planning to join Formula E in the coming years, Verstappen, who on the other hand would not be against a potential commitment in Endurance, is critical of FE and in particular the Tokyo circuit, where it is Maserati driver Maximilian Günther who emerged as the winner.

« It was really nice to see the circuit in the city but at the same time, there was a jump at one point. I don’t know who had this idea but he was surely drunk, jokes the Dutch. « It was strange but I liked the race. I always like it because the talent in this series is very high and that’s what makes it exciting to watch.

On his side, Sergio Pérez praises the work done by Formula E since the category exists.

(I) I think it’s good to have a series that gives the opportunity to drivers who cannot be in Formula 1, to earn their money and live off their passion. As a category, we must respect what they focus on. And I think they do a very good job. So yes, congratulations.

Six former Formula 1 drivers are racing in Formula E this year. They are Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne at DS Penske, Lucas di Grassi at ABT Cupra, Pascal Wehrlein at Porsche, Sébastien Buemi at Envision Racing, and Nyck de Vries at Mahindra.
