Key figures for the Chinese Grand Prix
This weekend, the Formula 1 paddock prepares to return to the Shanghai circuit for the first time since 2019. An opportunity for us to look back at the figures we need to know before the 2024 edition of the Chinese Grand Prix.

5,451: Like the exact length of the Shanghai circuit track.
17: 2024 will host the 17th edition of the Chinese Grand Prix. The first edition took place 20 years earlier in 2004, won by Rubens Barrichello’s Ferrari. Only Covid-19 interrupted the continuity of the event between 2020 and 2023 on the F1 calendar.
56: The number of laps to cover by the winner and his pursuers to see the checkered flag of the Chinese Grand Prix.
6: The record for the most wins at the Chinese Grand Prix is, like many others, held by Lewis Hamilton. The Briton has triumphed on 6 occasions between 2008 and 2019. Behind him, Fernando Alonso (2005 and 2013) and Nico Rosberg (2012 and 2016) are the only other multiple winners of the event, with two victories each.
3: As the number of drivers who have already won an edition of the Chinese Grand Prix. In addition to Hamilton and Alonso, Daniel Ricciardo is the only other driver who has been victorious on this track, having won at the wheel of his Red Bull in 2018.
1.31’095: This is the absolute lap record on the Shanghai circuit. It belongs to Sebastian Vettel, who set it by taking the pole position in 2018.

16: The number of corners on the Chinese circuit including some mythical corners such as the first corner hairpin and the 14th corner at the end of the very long straight of the final sector, very favorable for overtaking.
1000: If the last edition was not the most memorable with a recital by Lewis Hamilton, this Grand Prix marked the history of the discipline by being the 1000th in the category. A significant number that we could not omit in this article!
5: This is the number of drivers absent during the previous edition of the Grand Prix in 2019. This figure is quite symbolic as it simply represents a quarter of the current Formula 1 grid! If Esteban Ocon is included in this number, as he was without a cockpit that year, it is important to note that the Norman has already raced on this circuit before on behalf of Force India in 2017 and 2018. Unlike Tsunoda, Piastri, Sargeant, and the local hero Guanyu Zhou, for whom 2024 will be their first experience on the Chinese circuit.
1: Shanghai has very often been the scene of firsts in Formula 1. Indeed, in 2009, Red Bull won its first victory and its first double with Vettel and Webber. In 2010, Russian driver Vitaly Petrov, thanks to a beautiful 7th place with Renault, opened his points account.
In 2012, it’s Nico Rosberg’s turn to triumph for the first time in the top category at the wheel of his Mercedes, a team that was claiming its first victory in 55 years.
During the same Grand Prix in 2012, Romain Grosjean scored his first points in F1 on his Lotus while Kamui Kobayashi set his first fastest lap in the race on his Sauber. In the latest edition in 2019, it’s the Frenchman Pierre Gasly on his Red Bull who set his first fastest lap in the race.
Finally, a temporal flashback but no less significant, the 2007 Chinese Grand Prix marked the first career retirement of a certain rookie named Lewis Hamilton, which will have serious consequences on his loss of the world title in the following Grand Prix in Brazil against Kimi Räikkönen.
The first free practice session of the Chinese Grand Prix will take place this Friday, April 19th starting at 5:30 a.m. French time. All the schedules to know can be found within the TV schedule.
