The Ferrari evolution package unveiled at Fiorano

Ferrari presented a significant upgrade package during a track day at its Fiorano test circuit on Friday, and will unveil it at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix next week.

Ferrari wanted to make many adjustments before the weekend at Imola. Focused on a change in philosophy for the sidepod and engine cover bodywork, the rest of the SF-24 will also undergo a transformation as the team looks for ways to put pressure on the Red Bull team and counter the threat now posed by McLaren in recent races.

Ferrari, which had switched to the air intake under the grille at the beginning of the season, now sports a layout with an intake above, similar to the configuration we saw on the Red Bull. The Austrian team had managed to reduce the size of its horizontal air intake, but Ferrari opted for a different, more expansive solution.

The vertical bypass duct next to the frame has been merged with the main entrance to form a larger entrance, as seen on Alpine and Mercedes, this year.

The stem of the exterior mirror has been elongated to help condition the airflow along the upper surface of the pontoon body. The overall configuration of the pontoon body has also been modified, with a more extended lower part, which allowed Ferrari designers to rework the shape of the pontoon side and adjust it to better harmonize with the floor.

Progress in sight

The extent of these external changes obviously required a reorganization of the internal elements of the SF-24, including the relocation and/or complete redesign of the radiators, coolers, and other auxiliary components of the power unit to adapt them to their new layout.

As a result, the engine hood has also been adjusted, with the louver panel previously located on the shelf-shaped section of the fairing. It has been exchanged for a larger and single outlet in the middle of the assembly, while the rear section is tightened to create space for heat dissipation.

Ferrari might have been able to gradually introduce some of these components on the car in China or Miami, but the team knows that this poses the risk of the sprint weekend format and the limited testing that can be done at these events.

Choosing to introduce this full set of upgrades in Imola should therefore represent a much bigger step forward for Ferrari, as it will have more time to assess and understand its impact.

This should also put the team in a good position for the second half of the season.
