Alex Albon joked that he could have swapped his Williams for his Vespa during the Monaco Grand Prix because the race was happening at such a slow pace.

Albon scored his first points of the season with Williams thanks to a strong performance, finishing in ninth place behind Yuki Tsunoda. Despite this positive result, he was frustrated to have spent 78 laps stuck behind the Racing Bulls driver.

The Thai driver said it was annoying to see how slow Tsunoda as well as a large part of the group were driving. It’s annoying because he had so much pace… I’m happy to manage [the pace] but we don’t need to manage so much, Albon said.

« He was managing [ed. note: slowing down] so much that I thought to myself, I could go out and ride my Vespa here. It was so slow. It’s so painful. It’s actually difficult to stay focused when going so slowly because you’re not even close to any limits. You’re not close to any limit. »

A frustrating race for the pilots

A rather boring race for the top 10 drivers, which remained unchanged between qualifying and the race. « It may have been a bit dull. I would have liked to have a more enjoyable, more fun race, to talk about how we scored our first points. But I’ll take it. P9 is great for us. It puts us in a positive momentum for the next races. Last year, it took us some time to get points, and then we really started to find our pace. So I don’t see why we couldn’t do that again », explains the Williams driver.

Williams scores their first points of the season in Monaco. « We obviously worked on the car, lightened the car, made some small improvements to the car and it paid off. »

Tsunoda explained that he simply respected the strategy that his team had asked him to follow, admitting that he did not like to limit his pace.

“I always have to respect the strategy we planned. Sometimes I had to slow down to make sure the cars behind didn’t stop at the pit stop or to make sure they couldn’t overtake us,” Tsunoda said.

« It was frustrating as a pilot, especially when you know there is a lot of pace available. But we have to stick to what the team says.
