The team based in Enstone had a difficult start to the 2024 season with their A524 F1. From the first races, the car found itself at the back of the field, accumulating only two points so far. These disappointing performances have fueled speculation that the parent company, Renault, may be considering selling the team.

The 2024 season, a real challenge for Alpine.

The team has been facing recurrent issues with the engine of the A524 F1, which lacked reliability and power compared to its competitors. These mechanical weaknesses were exacerbated by defects in the chassis design, resulting in an overall less competitive car. These issues prevented the team’s drivers from maximizing their potential and scoring points that are so valuable for the championship.

The Andretti organization, a well-known figure in the world of motorsports, has expressed interest in entering Formula 1. The FIA advised them to acquire an existing team, a strategy that would allow them to avoid the lengthy and costly administrative procedures of creating a new team. Alpine, with its current difficulties, has been seen as a possible target for Andretti. However, the categorical statements made by Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault, seem to have ruled out this possibility for the time being.

There’s no question of giving up.

In an exclusive interview with Autocar magazine, Luca de Meo was very clear about his position: “I want to be very clear. There is no question of giving up. It’s not my style. We won’t even sell part of this team. We don’t need money. People made offers to me right and left, then talked about it in the press. But we are not interested. It would be stupid and I won’t do it.”

In parallel, rumors have circulated about Geely’s interest, a giant in the automotive industry in China, to enter the world of Formula 1. Geely, owner of Volvo and a major shareholder of Daimler, could see acquiring an F1 team as a strategic opportunity to enhance its international presence and improve its brand image.

Luca de Meo’s determination to keep Alpine within the Renault fold reflects a long-term vision for the F1 team. Despite current challenges, he firmly believes in the team’s ability to overcome its difficulties and return to a competitive level of performance. His unequivocal statement also aims to reassure Alpine’s partners, sponsors, and fans by highlighting Renault’s commitment to the Formula 1 project.

In the interview with Autocar, de Meo insisted that selling the team would be a hasty and unwise decision. He emphasized that the issues encountered by Alpine have been resolved and that the team is working hard to improve its performances. De Meo also mentioned the importance of stability and continuity for an F1 team, essential elements for building a team capable of competing at the highest level.

The future of Alpine in Formula 1 thus remains in the hands of Renault. Despite speculations and rumors of a sale, Renault will not abandon its racing team. The firm is determined to overcome current challenges and bring Alpine back to the top of the grid.
