Formula 1 is obligated to operate under a budget cap. During the 2021 season, the Red Bull team exceeded this budget limit. The team was penalized for this season with a fine of 7 million euros and reduced time in the wind tunnel and in computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

The FIA is currently checking if no team exceeds the budget cap during the 2022 season. According to rumors, 3 teams would have exceeded this limit. Christian Horner claims that Red Bull was below the budget cap.

Last year, Max Verstappen damaged a front wing and Checo Perez had an accident in Montreal, and once again, we had a very limited amount of development on the car. So, we were several million below the budget cap last year because the damages caused by the accidents and the development are enormous costs,” said the Austrian team director in an interview with Sky Sports F1.

The Milton Keynes team is already affected by sanctions due to exceeding the budget: « This year, the biggest handicap we have is the lack of time in the wind tunnel, it is much less than any of our competitors, so we have to be very disciplined about where we focus our development » continued the British from the energy drink company.

The sanction that Red Bull is facing this season has forced the reigning world champion team to limit the developments on the current car and to [focus already on the 2024 season](/f1/actualite/31177-red-bull-va-deja-se-concentrer-developpement-f1-2024.html).
