The Hungarian Grand Prix, which has been widely talked about, highlighted many issues with teams’ strategies on the grid. Attention was particularly focused on McLaren this weekend, with Oscar Piastri’s controversial victory. Despite a winning race for the Australian, following the recent events, the numerous team radios of both drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been analyzed by the media, but there are some radios that seem to have escaped controversy.

During the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lance Stroll, a driver at Aston Martin, also decided not to obey his team’s orders. An episode that went unnoticed on television.

Stroll had to let Fernando Alonso pass.

Shortly before the end of the race, Fernando Alonso, another driver at Aston Martin, had managed to reach tenth place in the standings. A position that would have allowed him to score 1 point at the end of the race. With a rather disappointing car this year, the team wanted to overtake Yuki Tsunoda, who was in 9th place, to get both drivers into the points. Unfortunately, after a few attempts, Alonso was unable to catch up with the Racing Bulls.

As there were only 8 laps left in the race, Fernando Alonso’s engineer asked him to let Lance Stroll pass so that he could try to catch up with Tsunoda. « Fernando, we have one lap left to catch Tsunoda,” communicated his race engineer. « But otherwise, we could give… we will give Lance a chance. We will switch positions. If he doesn’t catch up, we will switch again.” `»`

The instructions were clear: let Lance Stroll pass so that he could reach ninth place. In case he couldn’t catch up, the tenth place would have been given to Alonso. But as we could see on the final ranking, it is Lance Stroll who occupies the tenth position and scores 1 more point for the team.

The instructions were not followed

During the first instruction given to Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll had expressed his discontent at being asked to give up 10th place. He communicated on the radio that he was capable of taking it himself without the help of his teammate. However, when he eventually occupied the position after an exchange, he was unable to catch up to Yuki Tsunoda, who was far ahead of the two cars. As indicated by the engineer at that time, Lance Stroll should have given back the position to Fernando Alonso. An instruction that was ignored by the Canadian driver.

« Now. You have to let Fernando pass before the line, he is four seconds behind you, there is no pressure behind,” Lance Stroll’s race engineer could be heard saying. To which the driver remained silent.

« Lance, I suggest you slow down and let Fernando pass. He is four seconds behind », we could hear again. Unfortunately, the window to let Alonso pass closed before the Canadian driver could respond to the radio. He therefore took the tenth position until the end of the race and took the last available point, leaving Alonso in 11th place.

For the moment, neither Aston Martin nor the drivers have communicated about this incident. However, there is a strong possibility that this will cause tensions within the team, especially since Fernando Alonso was already filmed having a heated exchange with Jo Bauer this weekend.
