F1 points system to remain unchanged after all

The F1 Commission unanimously decided to maintain the current points system for 2025. Only the Sauber team did not score any points this season, making a change to the points system irrelevant.

During Tuesday’s FIA Formula 1 Commission meeting, it was finally decided that the Formula 1 points system will remain unchanged in 2025, after all teams unanimously voted against its modification.

A proposal for equity

In April of this year, several teams discussed a new points system in Formula 1. At the beginning of the 2024 season, the grid was clearly divided into two with the top five teams and the bottom five less performant ones. With the current points system, the bottom five teams struggle to score points, as points are only awarded to the top 10 positions that are often occupied by the top teams and their two cars. Therefore, one must rely on luck to hope to reach the top 10.

Teams can sometimes count on an extra point for the driver with the fastest lap or the driver of the day, but once again, this extra point only comes into play when the driver in question manages to place himself in the top 10. They can also rely on sprint races to pick up a few points, but again, they have to be the best car on the track.

In order to avoid giving too much advantage to certain teams, the teams have therefore proposed to integrate a new scale into the regulations. This would involve extending the positions that award points by adding a few points up to the Top twelve or fourteen, or even for all teams. However, the decision does not seem to have convinced people.

Final decision

The proposal was discussed for the first time at the previous F1 Commission meeting in April. It had been postponed to the next meeting as it was considered necessary to take more time to reflect on the issue. The topic was therefore discussed again at this Tuesday’s meeting.

Finally, during this meeting, which was attended by the ten Formula 1 teams as well as the F1 and FIA officials, it was unanimously decided that the points system would remain unchanged for 2025. The information was shared through the FIA press release.

This decision comes particularly after the current ranking obtained in the championship. For the moment, only the Sauber team has failed to score points this season, which makes the argument of difficulty in reaching the top 10 invalid. The FIA and all the participants in the meeting have thus decided that the points system will not change for 2025.
