James Vowles says the odds are in Williams’ favor to sign Carlos Sainz
According to team boss James Vowles, Carlos Sainz, still without a seat next year with the arrival of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, has a good chance of joining Williams in 2025.

Speculations about Carlos Sainz’s future in F1 are intensifying, as the driver and his father were seen heading to Williams’ motorhome this weekend in Spa. According to team principal James Vowles, Williams is increasingly hopeful of convincing Carlos Sainz to commit to his future in Formula 1 with the team, before the self-imposed deadline next week to finalize its line-up for 2025.
But the main person involved is evaluating several options for next year, including the Sauber/Audi team and Alpine.
Although there seems to have been little public progress in the decision of the Spaniard about his future in recent weeks, James Vowles said before the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday that he felt his team’s prospects were now increasing. When asked about his chances of beating Alpine and Audi to sign Sainz, Vowles told Autosport: « Out of 100, more than 50%. What do you think? »
« How confident am I? I think the odds are in our favor. But I’ve already been stung by this issue once this year. So, we’ll see.
The team manager confirmed that he has been hoping to find out what his team will be made of before the summer break, after the Belgian Grand Prix. “I’ve already said it before we go on summer holidays, yes. And I think there is a limit that I have set. I hope we will respect it,” said James Vowles. This suggests that things are on track for Williams.
If the team manager is also considering Valtteri Bottas for next season, he confirmed that Carlos Sainz is his favorite candidate.
