Oscar Piastri expressed his satisfaction after an excellent performance at the Spa Grand Prix. “I am quite happy overall, I think it was a really well-executed race,” he said at a press conference. Despite a less favorable starting position, he was able to take advantage of the strategy to move up in the standings. He finished third, but moves up to second place following George Russell’s disqualification.

Piastri mentioned that a one-stop strategy was a possibility they could have further considered. “Clearly, the one-stop was a possibility and I probably think there are a lot of people out there who are kicking themselves for not considering it more,” he added. However, he emphasized that their execution of the two-stop strategy was also successful, although it did not result in achieving the optimal position during qualifying.

The impact of dirty air on the race

Piastri was surprised by the effect of dirty air on his car. I was amazed to see how much of a difference dirty air made today. He explained that after Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc’s second pit stop, he gained a second per lap thanks to clean air. However, he later noticed new tire degradation, which led him to choose the two-stop strategy rather than just one.

When asked if this race was one of his best in Formula 1, Piastri replied positively. « I think it was a really strong race. » He mentioned Charles Leclerc’s crucial overtake as a defining moment in the race. « Trying to overtake Charles was not easy, and I think if I hadn’t managed to do it on that lap, I would probably have stayed stuck there for a long time. »

Piastri also commented on his progression throughout the season. The past few weeks have been very strong from my side. I honestly think that the whole season has been pretty good. He noted that a few weekends in the middle of the year had been tough, but that he had managed to sort out his performances recently. I feel like I’ve taken a step forward from last year, definitely.

A minor incident at the stand in Spa

He also explained a minor incident during his second pit stop, where he entered a little too fast. « No, I just entered a little too fast actually. » Although it didn’t cost much in the end, he emphasized the importance of improving these details for the next races.

In conclusion, Oscar Piastri is optimistic about the rest of the season, highlighting the progress made and the performance of his car. « I feel in a good position »,” he said, ready to approach the rest of the championship with confidence.
