Work continues on the Hungaroring circuit

The Hungaroring undergoes modernization work after the Hungarian Grand Prix. This includes the demolition of the pit building and the widening of the paddock. These renovations, requested by Liberty Media, will bring the Hungaroring up to current Formula 1 standards.

The Hungaroring, which was hosting the Hungarian Grand Prix just a few weeks ago, has turned into a construction site during the summer break. The pit building, where teams and drivers had recently set up for the race, no longer exists. Like many other circuits on the calendar, these works aim at modernizing the track.

A novelty strongly requested by Liberty Media

In Mogyoród, the town hosting the Hungarian Grand Prix, modernization works are underway. Last week, excavators razed the entire stand structure used during the race less than a month ago. The start and finish line as well as parts of the stands have been removed. These renovations have become essential and follow a demand from Liberty Media, owners of Formula 1.

The facilities on the circuit were among the oldest on the Formula 1 calendar and no longer met current standards. With no intention of leaving Hungary, Formula 1 had renewed the contract until 2032, but strongly hinted that work was needed. In response, circuit director Zsolt Gyulay had already announced major renovations in July.

The objective of this work is to meet the standards expected by the discipline. Although the modifications could extend over several years, the majority of the construction should be completed for the 2025 Grand Prix. « We told you that this was going to happen »,” commented the official account X of the circuit about the work.

A change that will impact the teams

Before this year’s Grand Prix, a first phase of construction had already taken place at the circuit. The utility network development is completed, and the main entrance and building, which now includes a reception center, have been established. However, interior work will continue until November 30, Zsolt Gyulay had declared.

Now, after a break during the race at the end of July, work should resume at a faster pace. Currently, demolition is taking place in the Super Gold stands and the iconic main building, and technicians are working at an extreme speed. Our common goal is to create a modern and innovative center for everyone,” continued the circuit director.

When Formula 1 returns next summer, the teams will have more appropriate facilities. It remains to be seen whether this indirectly affects the teams’ performances. The paddock has been expanded by 19 meters, it was reported. The run-off areas at turns 4 and 12 have been renovated, and the main building, which has been in place since 1986, will be demolished after the race. The new one will be nine meters wider as we are creating larger garages. We will practically say goodbye to the main building this weekend. In addition to these changes, parking spaces will be added behind the building.

On his part, Formula 1’s director, Stefano Domenicali, described these renovations as a « new important step » for the future of the Hungaroring. With the contract extension and ongoing upgrades, this historic circuit appears well-prepared for the years to come on the Formula 1 calendar.
