Lando Norris, George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda, and Liam Lawson were under investigation during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix for failing to comply with the aborted start procedure. The FIA finally sanctioned the first two and cleared the other drivers.
The start of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix (Brazil) was disrupted by Lance Stroll’s mistake in the formation lap. The Canadian driver went straight ahead and, by cutting through the gravel trap, got stuck. The FIA then triggered an aborted start procedure, because of the Aston Martin blocked on the track, but the drivers at the front positions evidently did not know what to do.
Thus, the first two, Lando Norris and George Russell, returned to the track instead of stopping at their spot, and led the movements of the other drivers behind them to follow them on a new formation lap.
The procedure normally requires stopping and waiting. But as the two Racing Bulls drivers were on the second row and did not move directly first, the FIA considered that they were just following the behavior of the drivers ahead of them and therefore did not take their responsibility into account.
The two Racing Bulls drivers, Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson, have therefore been cleared of any wrongdoing.
According to the stewards, although the driver breached the regulations, this was influenced by the driver in front of him and therefore he was not primarily responsible for the infringement. Consequently, the stewards have decided not to take any further action, having judged that the driver immediately in front of him was at fault. » details the FIA statement.
