The Netflix series about Ayrton Senna is being released today
After months of waiting, Formula 1 fans and fans of Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna can finally discover the series produced by Netflix that retraces the career of the three-time world champion.
The end-of-year holidays are approaching, and Formula 1 fans can already rejoice in being (very) spoiled. In addition to experiencing three Grand Prix in three weekends with a constant battle in the constructors’ championship between McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull, they can, since this Friday, November 29, discover the mini-series produced by Netflix on the Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna.
Composed of six episodes, « Senna plunges us back into the career of the paulista legend portrayed by actor Gabriel Leone. To slip into the role of the three-time world champion in 1988, 1990, and 1991, Leone took up karting, watched Senna’s press conferences, interviewed the pilot’s family, and read as many books as possible about Alain Prost’s great rival. The latter is also portrayed on screen by the Franco-American actor Matt Mella.
Most of the race scenes were shot at the Juan y Oscar Gálvez circuit south of Bueno Aires, the site of twenty Argentinian Grand Prix races between 1953 and 1998. On this track, the filming teams managed to reproduce some of the most legendary layouts of the championship. Everything was treated in detail down to the costumes of the extras walking around the recreated paddock from the 80s and 90s.
Ayrton Senna is a true legend of Formula 1 and even of sport in general. In a decade of being at the pinnacle of motor racing, he managed to elevate driving a race car to the status of an art while creating a mystical aura around himself. In terms of statistics, the Brazilian won three world championships and 41 races, achieved 65 pole positions, and stepped on the podium 80 times.
