The Mexican, has dispelled concerns about his future, in a press conference and expressed his ambition for 2025.

During the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Sergio Perez experienced another complicated weekend, with a sixth elimination in Q1 this season, during Friday’s qualifying session. This forced him into another recovery race, where he finished in a modest 10th place. Nevertheless, Sergio Perez declared after the race that he felt close to turning the situation around, approaching the final two races of the season.

Quizzed before the penultimate round in Qatar about the necessary improvements, whether it be the car’s settings or his own adaptation, he explained: “I think in terms of settings, we are getting closer. In Vegas, we probably didn’t have the pace we had in São Paulo, but there are promising signs. We weren’t as competitive in Vegas in terms of team order, but I think this track should suit us.”

Perez talks about his difficulties.

Looking back on his 2024 season as a whole, Sergio Perez explained why his promising start was followed by difficulties throughout the year.

It was one of my best season starts, with four consecutive podiums, everything seemed to be going well. But as soon as we returned to Europe, I think our season took a turn. Other teams have improved and found a lot of performance, while we kind of lost our way with the car.

« There have been many weekends when nothing was working. We looked at all the areas [of the car], but in the end, there is a limit to what you can do in a weekend, and we lost a lot of points. The season has become much more difficult. But that’s how it is in F1. Sometimes things don’t go your way. We are still here, optimistic, and we believe we can turn things around, especially for next year.”

« I think it’s very difficult for those who are not on the team or present daily to understand why, from one race to another, you are so far behind, he explains.

When you can’t extract 100% from your car, no matter how good it is. And that’s what happened. I couldn’t get 100% out of my car because of the difficulties of recent months. That’s the main issue. As a team, we understand that and we’re working hard to solve the problems.

An uncertain future

Although Sergio Perez signed a two-year contract extension with Red Bull last June, his recent difficulties have fueled speculation about his future. When asked if he doubted his role in the team for 2024, he replied: « The team has all the information. There is a reason why we extended my contract this year, and the team knows exactly where we stand in terms of performance and difficulties.

We are working hard together to overcome this and come back to a much better season than the one we just had.

A crucial meeting of Red Bull shareholders will take place after Abu Dhabi to decide Sergio Perez’s fate.
