F1 Academy: Abbi Pulling crowned champion 2024 at the Qatar GP
At 21, British Abbi Pulling becomes the champion of the F1 Academy 2024 in Qatar, succeeding Marta Garcia. A driver for Alpine, she secures the title with a second place behind Doriane Pin and wins a funded spot in the British Formula 3 for 2025 with Rodin Motorsport.
British driver Abbi Pulling made history in motorsport by winning the F1 Academy 2024 championship at the Qatar Grand Prix. The 21-year-old driver, representing Alpine, secured her title by finishing second behind her French rival Doriane Pin, emerging as the second champion of this exclusively female series.
In a decisive race under the Qatari spotlights, where she started from 3rd position, Pulling only needed 18 points in the last four races to secure the title. The British driver showed her determination with a bold overtake on Maya Weug right from the first corner. Even though Pin dominated the race with a final lead of 6.7 seconds, second place was enough for Pulling to mathematically secure the title.
« I am speechless. It may be a cliche, but I am so happy, said an emotional Pulling after the race. « I really put all my heart on the track. We have had difficulties on this circuit since the trials, but I knew my opportunity would come at the start. I am very proud of myself, it was a champion’s drive. »
A championship that opens other doors
This victory represents much more than just a title for the young British woman. It ensures her a fully funded spot in British Formula 3 with Rodin Motorsport for the 2025 season, an opportunity that holds special importance considering her journey. « Every year, I approach winter not knowing what will happen, not knowing where I will go. This year, I can happily say that I have a seat. No matter how the year ends now, I know what I will do and it’s the best Christmas gift I could ask for. »
The emotion was palpable when she mentioned the crucial role of her father in her career. « My father is the one who made all the sacrifices. He normally works seven days a week, and he would take me everywhere on weekends to go running. He believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. It’s not just my dream and my journey, it’s his too. »
The 2024 season was particularly remarkable for Pulling, who never finished below third place. This consistency allowed her to build a 95-point advantage over her closest rival, Doriane Pin, even before the Qatar event. This outstanding performance adds to her historic achievement in British Formula 4, where she became the first woman to win a race at Brands Hatch.
Beyond her personal victory, Pulling understands the importance of her success for the future of women’s motor racing. “I am living proof that the system works. I had to give up a championship in 2021 due to lack of funding, and here I am back, champion. When you go to a karting circuit today, there are so many more women, and I can say with certainty that it’s thanks to all these female initiatives like the F1 Academy.”
This victory not only marks a historic moment for Pulling, but also represents an important step in the evolution of women’s motorsport. With her title and upcoming participation in GP3, she is paving the way for the next generation of female drivers, proving that the F1 Academy is fulfilling its role as a stepping stone to the highest levels of motorsport.
