Sainz convinced that his relationship with Albon will be smooth
The Spanish driver recently stated that he wants to build a solid collaboration with his new teammate Alexander Albon. According to him, there will be "no nonsense or politics" between the two men as Williams tries to best prepare its future in F1.
A new challenge for Carlos Sainz. After four seasons with Ferrari, during which he claimed four victories, the Spanish driver joined Williams in 2025 under a multi-year contract. While this decision surprised many observers, the former Renault driver is convinced of his choice. He recently made this known. « When I started discussing more in detail with James, I realized that he had put together a very solid project at Williams. He was forming a team with a vision, with a project with Dorilton that I believe will bring this team back to the forefront with a very strong leadership and with a vision that, from the start, made me fall in love with the project and trust his leadership. »
A driver who has led midfield teams
The Spaniard is aware that unlike Ferrari, Williams will not compete for victories right away. It’s a situation he has experienced in the past when he joined Renault in 2017 or McLaren in 2019, during which he significantly progressed his teams. Sainz is convinced that the British team has the capabilities to achieve the same success as the Grove team, and he has already indicated that he will give his maximum for the team.
I know that Williams has a good project, that it is supported and that it has good people. The thing that impressed me the most, to be honest with you, is everyone’s motivation, even at the end of a year where we all know the last races have been difficult. If the 2025 season for Williams will be complicated, with the team having already declared wanting to focus mainly on 2026, the arrival of a driver like Carlos Sainz comes at the right time for a team in a difficult situation. The team director, James Vowles, has also interviewed the Spaniard regarding his role as a team builder, a role the British team hopes he will take on starting this season.
Sainz ready to bring Williams back to the front
« You have a reputation for being a driver who helps a team strengthen after your time with them. You have been alongside Lando [Norris] at McLaren and Charles [Leclerc] at Ferrari. What do you think are the traits that set you apart and make you someone capable of helping a team grow while integrating into a dynamic where drivers are fierce competitors? » asked the Briton in a video published on the team’s YouTube channel. The former Toro Rosso driver preferred to remain modest on this point.
« I don’t really like talking about myself or putting myself too much in the spotlight, as it can sometimes seem arrogant or give an impression of overconfidence. I can simply say that I always give my best to every team, whether at the factory or on the track. I try to spend as much time as possible working with the engineers, with a positive mindset. My goal is not only performance but also to create a good atmosphere and to convey my passion for this sport, which is immense. I love racing, I love traveling to the circuits, spending time with my engineers, analyzing the settings, the onboard videos, everything. »
An association with Albon that he considers “natural”
Describing himself as a racing addict, the son of the double world rally champion also reflected on the beginning of his relationship with Albon. According to the Spaniard, it’s a partnership that’s going well. “I think with Alex, we form a natural duo. He’s easygoing, like me, no nonsense, no politics. He’s a very good person. Together, we can build a solid partnership and help this team progress with the right mindset. Honestly, I can’t wait to get started.”
Carlos Sainz’s wish will be granted on February 26, the day when the 2025 single-seaters will set off for the first time in real conditions at the start of the winter testing.
