New gearboxes for Stroll, Hülkenberg and Perez
Lance Stroll will use his 3rd gearbox. The Canadian will not be penalized with grid position penalties yet, as the Aston Martin driver remains within the limit of 4 different gearboxes for the season. « The transmission shaft, gear change components, and auxiliary components used by Lance Stroll are one of the four new transmission shafts, gear change components, and auxiliary components allowed for the 2023 championship season » explains the FIA in its press release.
Sergio Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg are changing their gearboxes for this weekend at Silverstone. Like Lance Stroll, the Red Bull driver will use his third gearbox for the British Grand Prix. The German driver and the Haas driver, on the other hand, will use a fourth gearbox. This is the last gearbox allowed for car number 27 on the F1 grid. With less than half of the season remaining, Nico Hülkenberg will be penalized for the next gearbox change.
Engine part changes to note
Several drivers will also make parts changes. These changes concern components of the power unit of the cars.
The two Red Bulls, George Russell’s cars, Nico Hülkenberg’s, and Nyck de Vries’ have installed a new engine (Internal Combustion Engine- ICE). The Haas driver is going to use his third ICE. Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, and Nyck de Vries themselves are using their third engine. « The internal combustion engine used by the drivers is one of the four engines authorized for the 2023 championship season » state the race commissioners. The double world champion, Checo Perez, the Mercedes driver, and the Dutchman from AlphaTauri will be using a new kinetic energy recovery system (MGU-K). This usage will have no impact on the drivers.
Max Verstappen will use a third exhaust system, while Sergio Perez, George Russell, and Nyck de Vries are in the same situation. Nico Hülkenberg will use a fourth exhaust system. The FIA states that no driver will be penalized for their multiple parts changes. The exhaust system used by the aforementioned drivers is one of the eight new authorized exhaust systems for the 2023 championship season, in accordance with Article 28.2 of the 2023 Formula One sporting regulations.
