Grand Prix of Great Britain – F2 Qualifying: Victor Martins on pole position
New pole position for Victor Martins, impressive. Théo Pourchaire disappoints with an 8th position but still ahead of his main championship rival: Frederik Vesti is 10th.
Slippery this morning, the Silverstone track has gained grip with the passage of Formula 1 and Formula 3. The key to this qualification is to take care of these tires throughout the lap in order not to lose performance.
At the end of the first quick round, it’s Victor Martins who sets the fastest time, with a comfortable lead over the rest of the field. Richard Verschoor is second, over a tenth and a half behind, and in third place, we find Théo Pourchaire, nearly three tenths behind. The championship leader, Frederik Vesti, has his first attempt cancelled: he goes from 9th to 22nd place and absolutely needs to bank another lap. His rookie teammate, Oliver Bearman, finishes 5th after this first attempt.
Suddenly, Amaury Cordeel forcefully exits the track at Copse corner and causes a red flag. His car is completely destroyed.
The session resumes, but after a few moments, a new red flag is deployed. Furthermore, the session is shortened so as not to delay the Formula 1. Vesti is under immense pressure, with only 9 minutes remaining. There will only be one or two fast laps.
Ayumu Iwasa is the first to start a quick lap in the last 5 minutes, followed by Leclerc. All the drivers are improving their times. Martins takes back the pole position ahead of Kush Maini and Jack Doohan. Pourchaire is in 7th place, ahead of Vesti in 9th. The top 8 drivers are separated by just two tenths of a second. Meanwhile, Correa goes off track.
In the final lap, Iwasa breaks the record for the second sector but finishes only 3rd.
Martins is in pole position. Pourchaire finishes 8th and Vesti 10th. The Dane will start in pole position for Saturday’s sprint race. A bit disappointing for Théo Pourchaire, who had the car to aim for a better result than 8th place.
