As Toto Wolff and Fred Vasseur, the team principals of Mercedes and Scuderia Ferrari respectively, were attending the 2025 Formula 1 season launch event, BBC Sport asked Toto Wolff about Lewis Hamilton’s departure: « I think now it’s Fred’s problem », Toto Wolff said jokingly.

12 years and 8 constructors’ championships with Mercedes, it brings people together. Toto Wolff compared this separation to a divorce: « It’s like an amicable divorce, you remain friends, but the first time you see her with a new partner, it’s a bit… » But Fred Vasseur didn’t give him the time to clarify his thoughts.

« You have to pay alimony, right? Or something like that when you get divorced, right? » joked the team director of Scuderia Ferrari.

« But he remarried… You took over… », retorted Toto Wolff, not letting himself be pushed around.

And then, after the laughter, the Mercedes team director attempted to express more seriously his feelings about his now former driver this season. But the effort didn’t last, and Toto Wolff concluded by returning to a humorous tone.

« We’ve known him for so long, he ran with Fred and… well, it’s your problem now. »

During the launch event, Jack Whitehall, who was presenting it, joked about this separation between Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff. This metaphor between the seven-time world champion’s departure and a divorce is not likely to fade from people’s minds.
