Carlos Sainz has been appointed director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA)
Carlos Sainz replaces the four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, who left his position within the F1 drivers' union. Before the 2021 season, Carlos Sainz had already taken the German's place at Ferrari.

The GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers’ Association) is the organization representing Formula 1 drivers, created in 1961. It plays an advisory role on safety and regulatory issues.
This body has the mission of ensuring pilots’ safety, their representation, handling technical and regulatory issues, fostering solidarity among pilots, and promoting social engagement. These missions are carried out through safety meetings, press conferences, workshops, charity events, and promotional activities.
These tasks position the GPDA as a key player in ensuring the safety and comfort of drivers in the world of Formula 1.
Last November, the GPDA made headlines by openly criticizing the management of Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA, after the FIA decided to sanction certain drivers for rude remarks. It also questioned the allocation of fines paid by the drivers.
Carlos Sainz appointed director
« I am proud, I am passionate about my sport, and we have a responsibility », declares the Spaniard.
Carlos Sainz has been appointed president of the GPDA. He will succeed Sebastian Vettel, who retired in 2022, and will assume the roles previously held by George Russell and Anastasia Fowle, alongside the association’s main delegate, Alex Wurz.
« I am passionate about my sport and I believe drivers have a responsibility to work with other stakeholders to lead the sport in various ways, so I am happy and proud to do my part by taking on the role of GPDA director », said the Williams driver in a statement from the organization.
Alex Wurz, who remains in position, said: “We are delighted to welcome Carlos as the director of the GPDA. He has been an active and committed member for many years, and we appreciate his dedication to taking on this essential role.”
After beginning his career in 2015 with Toro Rosso, Carlos Sainz celebrated his ten years in Formula 1. He also raced for Renault, McLaren, and Ferrari before joining Williams, the team he will drive for in 2025.
He has four World Championship victories to his name, 27 podiums, with the last one in Abu Dhabi last year. 206 Grand Prix starts and 5 pole positions. He is one of the four drivers on the current grid who are 30 years or older, alongside Fernando Alonso (43), Lewis Hamilton (40), and Nico Hülkenberg (37).
