Official: Liam Lawson returns to Racing Bulls
The New Zealand driver has already been dismissed by Red Bull. In Japan, he will be replaced by Yuki Tsunoda. Liam Lawson returns to Racing Bulls.

Canal+ was right after all. A few days ago, the French broadcaster of Formula 1 announced that Liam Lawson would be replaced by Yuki Tsunoda for the Japanese Grand Prix. On Thursday, March 27, the Austrian team officially confirmed the news.
“After a difficult start to the season for Liam Lawson, Red Bull has made the decision that from the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix onwards, Yuki Tsunoda will drive for Red Bull and Liam for Racing Bulls. Red Bull is in the unique position of having four spots on the Formula 1 grid, with Red Bull and Racing Bulls. Therefore, the team has decided to rotate drivers, allowing Yuki to partner with the current four-time world champion, Max Verstappen,” the statement read.
Liam Lawson’s time within the Milton Keynes setup was short-lived. The New Zealander competed in only two races alongside the four-time world champion. During this brief stint, he failed to score any points and struggled throughout.
“It was tough to see Liam struggle at the wheel of the RB21 during the first two races and, as a result, we collectively made the decision to make an early change. We entered the 2025 season with two goals: to retain the Drivers’ World Championship and reclaim the Constructors’ title, and this is a purely sporting decision,” explained Christian Horner, who said the decision was made to “protect” his driver. “It makes sense to act quickly so that Liam can gain experience by continuing his F1 career with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, an environment and team he knows very well.”
