Max Verstappen has just won his 7th race in 10 rounds. Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez complete the podium. 8 drivers were penalized by the race stewards up to 5 hours after the Dutchman’s victory.

After the race, the stewards imposed a series of penalties, sanctioning 8 drivers: Carlos Sainz, Lewis Hamilton, Pierre Gasly, Alexander Albon, Esteban Ocon, Logan Sargeant, Nyck De Vries, and Yuki Tsunoda.

All the drivers have been sanctioned after the race for repeatedly crossing the line.

The commissioners have actually shown a little more leniency because after 5 infractions, the penalties are reset instead of increasing the severity of the penalty in order to avoid exclusions. Indeed, the accumulating penalties become more intense. 5 seconds for the smallest penalty, 10 seconds, a pit lane penalty, and then exclusion.

The stewards therefore opted for a different solution. When a driver commits 4 track infringements, they receive a reprimand of 5 seconds penalty. If the driver exceeds track limits for a fifth time, they will be given a fine of 10 seconds. The driver will again have the opportunity to be warned three times before receiving a new penalty for exceeding track limits.

After the arrival of this Grand Prix, several drivers received 10-second penalties. Carlos Sainz, Lewis Hamilton, Pierre Gasly, Alexander Albon, and Logan all took a 10-second penalty on their total race time. Each of these drivers exceeded the track limits at least 5 times.

Ocon the most heavily penalized

The biggest penalty is for Alpine driver Esteban Ocon. The Frenchman was given a 30-second punishment after the race. Throughout the Grand Prix, car number 31 from the French team exceeded track limits 10 times. The Alpine driver also received a 5-second penalty for an unsafe release in the pit lane. Esteban Ocon accumulated 35 seconds of penalties during the Austrian Grand Prix. The Frenchman, who had finished 12th, was demoted to 14th place in the final result.

The Dutch driver from AlphaTauri was also reprimanded twice. The Formula E world champion in 2021 received a 10-second penalty and an additional 5-second penalty during the Grand Prix. Nyck de Vries therefore crossed the white lines, which define the track limit, a total of 9 times.

The last person involved is Nyck de Vries’ teammate at AlphaTauri. Yuki Tsunoda was given a 5-second penalty after the race.

A penalty shower that highlights the difficulties of the cars to stay on the track. The stewards highly recommend finding a solution to the track limits situation on this circuit, explains the FIA in its statement on the penalties issued to the drivers.

Despite all the sanctions, the podium remained composed of Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Sergio Pérez.
