The Formula 1 championship arrives in Imola this weekend for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, the seventh round of the 2025 season. After another victory for Oscar Piastri in Miami, the title race is tightening between the McLaren drivers, while Red Bull and Mercedes are trying to get back into the fight. Here’s everything you need to know to follow the event.

McLaren dominates, the competition organizes itself.

Oscar Piastri dominates the championship with 131 points, ahead of his teammate Lando Norris (115 points). Max Verstappen (99), the four-time reigning world champion, is 32 points behind the leader while George Russell (93) is 38 points back.

In the constructors’ standings, the Woking team boasts a considerable lead with 246 points, ahead of Mercedes (141 points), Red Bull (105 points), and Ferrari (94 points).

First stop of the triple European confrontation, Emilia-Romagna could redefine the hierarchy of the grid, with most teams planning to introduce significant upgrades to their cars. These upgrades will determine if McLaren can maintain its dominance or if Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari will manage to close the gap.

Antonelli at home, Ferrari under the spotlight

The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix will have particular importance for Ferrari in front of its home crowd. Under pressure after lackluster results, the Italian team hopes to shine at home and close the gap with the leading teams. Furthermore, Lewis Hamilton, now a driver for the Scuderia, will face the Tifosi for the first time under his new colors.

Another attraction of the weekend is the young Italian prodigy Kimi Antonelli at the wheel of his Mercedes. After impressing in Miami by securing the pole position for the sprint race, the rookie will compete in his first home Grand Prix.

Demanding circuit, uncertain weather for Sunday

Imola is one of the most emblematic and technical circuits of the championship, known for its fast and winding layout, where mistakes are rarely forgiven. With only one DRS zone and gravel traps, the starting position for the race will be crucial for the drivers, as overtaking is complex.

According to the weather forecast, Friday’s free practice sessions and Saturday’s qualifying will take place under abundant sunshine, with temperatures hovering around 27°C for all three days. However, Sunday’s race could be disrupted by showers during the 63 laps, adding an element of unpredictability to the event.

The sessions will be broadcast live on Canal+ (France), Auvio and Tipik (Belgium), and RTS (Switzerland). All the schedules can be found below.
