24 Heures du Mans – Race: Ferrari #83 wins after a very fast race

Four cars were vying for victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Despite a wild comeback, the #6 Porsche failed to beat the #83 Ferrari. The distance record was close to being broken, despite the cars being much slower than the 2010 LMP1s.

A race far from being interesting, but which started at a fast pace. During the first hours of the race, the lack of incidents on the track had raised hopes for a distance record during the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Even the accident of the #88 Ford Mustang due to a poorly attached wheel did not really disrupt the competitors’ speed.

After the hyperpole, Sébastien Bourdais, the driver of the Cadillac #38, feared that several teams were hiding their game. He was right. In one lap, Kévin Estre, driver of the Porsche #6, made a fantastic comeback and even found himself on the provisional podium at the end of his stint.

Two dropouts at Cadillac

During the night, mechanical problems dashed the chances of several cars: the #46 of WRT, the #95 of United Autosports, the #60 of Iron Lynx. Two accidents were noteworthy: the #24 of Nielsen that hit the tire wall at Tertre Rouge and the #31 of WRT that collided with a rabbit, causing significant damage.

The two invited Cadillacs, #101 and #311, had to retire due to mechanical problems. The four American cars showed strong pace at the beginning of the race, but they faltered as the laps went by. Only #12 maintained its position.

The Peugeots and Alpines were generally disappointing, except for the #94, which completed a race without real issues and was the most convincing of the four French cars. The #93 ruined its race in the first few minutes, and the A424s lacked the performance to compete with the others in front. The Dieppe brand nevertheless salvaged the situation with a tenth place thanks to the #35. It’s important to note the level of the Aston Martins, which were not left behind as expected. They did not encounter major problems.

After the last pit stops, Robert Kubica in the #83 Ferrari widened the gap against Kévin Estre’s #6 Porsche. The Frenchman gave it his all, even making a remarkable comeback at the beginning of the race, but the Scuderia was too fast for him today.

In LMP2, the Inter Europol #43 lost the victory in the last half-hour after a drive-through. The #48 of VDS Panis Racing didn’t ask for more to claim a class victory. But the car of the Polish team gave it their all to regain its due a quarter of an hour from the end.

In GT3, the Porsche showed a certain speed throughout this race. Without mechanical misfortune, the Iron Dames could have achieved a good result, but they finished in the last place. Meanwhile, the #92 of Manthey Racing won the Le Mans classic with the Stuttgart car.

With 387 laps completed by the Ferrari #83, Audi’s distance record, dating from 2010 with 397 laps, was not far from being broken.
