For Frédéric Vasseur, Ferrari has the ideal duo of drivers
In an interview given to the Italian newspaper Corriere, Frédéric Vasseur discusses the talent of his drivers and Ferrari's desire to continue with them. The team and the drivers have the same goal: to win together.
Currently fourth in the world championship, Ferrari aims to return to the front. Frédéric Vasseur discussed his first few months as the director of Scuderia Ferrari, with the Italian media outlet Corriere.
The Frenchman, at the head of the team with the prancing horse, provides all his support to his two drivers.
“I am satisfied with Carlos, he is consistent and provides important technical pointers. Along with Charles, he forms a winning duo. I think he is highly underestimated,” explained the director of the Ferrari team.
The 55-year-old Frenchman has still not discussed a contract renewal with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. « There are 18 months left before the deadline (for the end of Sainz and Leclerc’s contract). At the moment, bringing up the subject of renewal would be a distraction, as I told their managers a few weeks ago. The priority is for the drivers to work together to develop the car. Then, during the summer or afterwards, we will start talking about it. »
The fear of losing its drivers is always a problem. But, for the French, both should remain under the Ferrari banner in the future. They are both attracted to the project, they want to stay and win. We must think as a team and mature in all areas. Only talking about the drivers today would be a mistake for the progress we have to make as a team, Frédéric Vasseur tells Corriere.
To keep the Monegasque driver, Ferrari has the solution. The best way is to give him a competitive car. He knows that every season is crucial for his career. He has only one goal: to become world champion. And winning the title is also our goal. We must ensure that he and Carlos feel at the center of the project.
For Vasseur, the Sainz/Leclerc duo is a winner
The two drivers are complementary. The teammates could be the winning duo for Scuderia Ferrari according to Frédéric Vasseur. However, in order to win, Charles Leclerc must stop making mistakes.
« Carlos is quick and well-balanced, but like everyone else, he has room for improvement. Charles, on the other hand, is capable of performing magic in qualifying and going the extra mile. Sometimes, he pushes beyond the limit, always seeking the maximum even when the car cannot provide it. He always wants to win, so he can make mistakes, as he did at the beginning of the season.
