A crucial validation

This validation gives the circuit a three-year period to complete the planned work. Once the modifications are finished, the FIA will conduct a final inspection before granting the Grade 1 license, essential for hosting a Grand Prix.

The owner of the circuit, Toby Venter, stated: “We are ready for the return of Formula 1 on African soil,” during a press conference on Wednesday.

“It’s a pivotal moment for South African motorsport,” stated Toby Venter. “When we acquired Kyalami in 2014, we committed to restoring it, not only as a world-class venue but also as a symbol for motorsport across the African continent. The FIA’s approval of the Grade 1 design is a significant step forward in this project. Today, we are opening a bold new chapter for Kyalami.”

Notably, the approved project does not include any changes to the current 4.5 km route. Efforts will instead focus on safety and infrastructure, with planned improvements to the runoff areas, barrier systems, debris fences, rumble strips, and drainage.

The company Apex Circuit Designs, already involved in the Miami Grand Prix project, will be responsible for supervising the work at Kyalami.

The initial developments will begin at a time when they will not disrupt scheduled events. However, the circuit specifies that some work will only be launched once South Africa is officially included in the F1 calendar and Kyalami is selected as the preferred host site.

Kyalami has a rich heritage in Formula 1, having hosted 21 editions of the South African Grand Prix between 1967 and 1993. The circuit was also the venue for five MotoGP Grand Prix in the 1980s and 1990s and regularly features on endurance racing calendars with the famous 9 Hours of Kyalami race.
