After a two-week break following the Canadian Grand Prix, Formula 1 returns to Europe for the eleventh round of the 2025 season, heading to the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. Oscar Piastri leads the championship after the incident between the McLarens in Montreal, while Max Verstappen faces the threat of a suspension in front of his home crowd. Find the schedule and key information for the weekend below.

Piastri still in the lead

Oscar Piastri now has 198 points in the drivers’ championship, giving him a 22-point lead over Lando Norris. The gap widened in Canada where the two McLaren teammates collided on the pit straight, leading to the Briton’s retirement. It was the first clash between the two Woking drivers, which somewhat disrupted Norris’s title race.

On the constructors’ side, Mercedes has climbed back to second place with 199 points thanks to George Russell’s victory in Canada, relegating Ferrari to third place with 183 points. Red Bull remains in touch with the chasers, in fourth position with 162 points.

Russell and Mercedes Confident

George Russell arrives in Austria with a smile after his victory in Montreal, Mercedes’ first of the season. The Briton took advantage of the McLarens’ collision to win ahead of Kimi Antonelli, who secured his first podium in Formula 1. A Mercedes one-two that reignites the German team’s ambitions in the hierarchy.

Russell had already won the Austrian Grand Prix last year after the collision between Verstappen and Norris on the last lap. The Mercedes driver hopes to confirm his good form on this circuit which he knows well.

Verstappen under maximum surveillance

Max Verstappen approaches his home Grand Prix in a delicate situation. The Dutchman is one penalty point away from an automatic suspension, a threat that has been looming over the four-time world champion for several weeks.

Fortunately for him, two penalty points will disappear from his super license after Austria, the ones he received during his collision with Norris last year on the same circuit. Verstappen has 155 points in the championship, 43 points behind Piastri, but he can rely on the specifics of the Red Bull Ring where he has won five times.

Ferrari seeks the solution

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are still going through a difficult period with the SF-25. Ferrari is preparing a package of upgrades for Spielberg in the hope of closing the gap to the leaders. Hamilton, winner in Austria in 2016, is still struggling to adapt to his new car and is looking for the breakthrough that could reignite his season.

The Italian team occupies third place in the constructors’ championship but is 191 points behind McLaren. The improvements planned for this weekend represent a significant challenge for the continuation of the campaign.

A circuit conducive to spectacle

The Red Bull Ring remains one of the shortest tracks on the calendar with its 4.3 kilometers and three consecutive DRS zones. This configuration favors overtaking and promises an action-packed spectacle over the 71 laps of the race. Turns 3 and 4 traditionally constitute the hot spots for on-track battles.

The altitude of 700 meters complicates the cooling of the engines and brakes, adding an additional technical challenge for the teams.

Mild weather expected

Unlike typical Austrian conditions, the weather is expected to be favorable with temperatures around 30°C and sunny skies. Only a slight chance of thunderstorms remains for Sunday, but conditions should stay dry for the entire weekend.

The return of Formula 2 and Formula 3 in support of the Grand Prix promises a busy schedule in the Styrian mountains. The sessions of the Austrian Grand Prix will be broadcast live on Canal+ (France), TIPIK and Auvio (Belgium), and RTS (Switzerland). All the schedules can be found below.
