Formula 1 is contesting its fourteenth round of the season this weekend in Budapest with the Hungarian Grand Prix. This race marks the last stage before a four-week summer break in a championship largely dominated by McLaren. The completely renovated Hungaroring welcomes the drivers with summer temperatures and a possible risk of rain on Sunday. Here is everything you need to know to not miss anything.

Piastri in a position of strength

The two McLaren drivers are dominating this 2025 season outrageously. With ten victories in thirteen races, the British team has taken a serious option on both titles. They have 516 points in the constructors’ standings, 268 more than their closest rival Ferrari. Oscar Piastri, winner at Spa, has 266 points and maintains a sixteen-point lead over Lando Norris. The Australian has a significant margin, but he knows his teammate remains formidable, especially in qualifying.

This fratricidal battle takes on a particular dimension in Budapest. Last year, Piastri had claimed his first Grand Prix victory there, ahead of Norris, in a race marked by team orders. He hopes to repeat this performance on a track that suits him. On his side, Norris, beaten in Belgium despite taking pole, must urgently regain points before the summer break if he wants to stay in the title race.

Verstappen seeks the summit

Max Verstappen occupies third place in the championship with 185 points, 81 units behind Piastri. The Dutchman is experiencing his longest winless streak since reaching the top. His last victory dates back to May in Emilia-Romagna.

Red Bull is content with fourth place in the constructors’ standings with 192 points, far behind McLaren and their usual level. The Hungaroring, a more technical circuit than Spa, might suit the RB21 better if the team finds the right aerodynamic setup. Verstappen won in Budapest in 2022 and 2023 and undoubtedly hopes to return to winning ways.

Ferrari between Progress and Difficulties

Charles Leclerc secured his fifth podium of the season in Belgium. The Monegasque driver ranks fifth in the championship with 139 points and is closing in on George Russell, who is fourth with an 18-point lead.

Lewis Hamilton arrives in Budapest with mixed feelings. The seven-time world champion, record holder for victories at the Hungaroring with eight wins, demonstrated the potential of his Ferrari at Spa by starting from the pit lane and finishing in seventh place. This performance proves that once the right setup is found, Hamilton can be formidable at the wheel of the SF-25. The challenge remains to find this chemistry starting from the free practice sessions.

Ferrari, which introduced its new rear suspension at Spa to try to stabilize its car and improve its ride height management, maintains its second place in the Constructors’ Championship with 248 points ahead of Mercedes (220 points), but has a significant gap to the leader McLaren.

Hungaroring: renovated facilities

The Hungarian circuit unveils its new facilities after twelve months of work. The new central paddock includes modernized garages equipped with the latest technologies, air-conditioned offices for the teams, and redesigned hospitality areas. The new stands offer 15,000 additional seats with a better view of the key corners.

Three new tunnels ease traffic around the site, including an underpass connecting the paddock to the VIP areas. The main building has been rebuilt with a 2,000 square meter media center and press conference rooms meeting current Formula 1 standards. These investments of 85 million euros are transforming the Hungaroring into a benchmark circuit.

These transformations are the most significant since the circuit opened in 1986. The layout remains the same with its 4.381 kilometers and fourteen turns, but the overall environment has been redesigned to improve logistics and comfort.

Weather and strategy

The weather forecast predicts a sunny weekend with temperatures around 27 degrees on Friday and Saturday. Sunday might have some surprises with a 50% chance of rain. After the eventful races at Silverstone and Spa in the rain, the teams are closely monitoring the Hungarian weather.

The Hungaroring favors cars with strong aerodynamic downforce. The tight corners and short straights limit overtaking opportunities, making qualifying particularly important.

The sessions of the Hungarian Grand Prix will be broadcast live on Canal+ (France), TIPIK and Auvio (Belgium), and RTS (Switzerland). All the schedules can be found below.
