Fernando Alonso defends Lance Stroll: « He has had a lot of bad luck
The Spanish driver defended his teammate at Aston Martin, saying that Lance Stroll had been unlucky rather than lacking pace in the recent races.
While Fernando Alonso is currently in 3rd place in the championship with 93 points, Lance Stroll is only in 8th place with 27 points. The difference was even more evident at the Monaco Grand Prix, where the Spanish driver finished in second place on the podium, while the Canadian had to retire.
Faced with this gap between the two drivers, rumors are running wild about the future of the boss of Aston Martin’s son. Criticisms that Fernando Alonso dismisses with a wave of the hand, instead defending his teammate.
“He has been very unlucky in the last two races,” said Fernando Alonso during a press conference on Thursday in Barcelona. “If you go back to Bahrain, he was very fast when he was driving alone. Then in Jeddah, he had an exhaust issue while he was ahead of the Ferraris in P5.”
Easy criticisms
“In Miami, we took too many risks in Q1 and it compromised his race,” adds the Spaniard, recalling the decision to use only one set of tires during that session. “In Monaco, the wreckage of Lando’s (Norris) car completely hindered his weekend. Obviously, it made headlines, it’s very easy to be harsh about that. If you look at the entire weekend, in Monaco during FP3, he was less than half a tenth off the fastest. He gives us good feedback, information on strategy, and everything else.”
The driver indeed does not appreciate easy criticisms towards his teammate. What I don’t like about Formula 1 is that we always see the negative aspects. “We always see things too easily from the couch,” concludes the Spanish pilot.
