Former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle believes that Sergio Perez must “embrace the genius” of Max Verstappen in order to achieve more success in Formula 1.

The Dutch driver has taken a 39-point lead in the championship thanks to his victory in Monaco, while the Mexican driver finished 16th.

Pérez qualified dead last after crashing in the qualifying session and was furious with his mistake. After failing to regain positions during the race, he even had to give up a lap to his teammate.

« It’s always quite easy to crash here, of course, but the driver who suffered the most this weekend actually won last year and is a specialist in street circuits. » explains Brundle.

The Formula 1 commentator in England believes that Pérez should «maximize” the areas that can be controlled, and “ensure” that he finishes second when Verstappen excels. To do this, he speaks from his own experience: « What I learned when I was directly competing against Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, and Mika Hakkinen, and simply couldn’t match their raw speed and talent, is to maximize everything that was within my power, like the race car setup, starts, pit stop in-laps, out-laps, managing traffic, and so on. »

(S) Sergio would do well to make sure he finishes second and accept Verstappen’s genius, and then gather victories on the days he produces his own magic, like in Singapore last year and in Baku this season.

Trapped by the Monaco circuit, the Mexican won’t have too much time to overthink as the Spanish Grand Prix is looming this weekend.
