Fernando Alonso wants to continue fighting for the title

Fernando Alonso is still the closest competitor to Red Bull in the championship standings. Sergio Perez's mistake during the Monaco Grand Prix has given Aston Martin's driver hope of closing the gap.

Fernando Alonso has promised not to “give up” the fight for the championship with Red Bull after his second place in the Monaco Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen won his fourth victory of the 2023 F1 season in Monte Carlo, extending his lead at the top of the drivers’ championship to 39 points over his teammate Sergio Perez, who did not score any points.

The 41-year-old veteran remains third, trailing Perez by 12 points. Although he acknowledges that catching up to Red Bull may be difficult to achieve, the two-time world champion has learned from his past experiences that anything can happen in this sport.

I think that in any other season that I remember, in the 2000s or early 2010s, I would be leading the championship with the results I’ve achieved this year. But now, Red Bull and Max dominate every race and even with excellent results, you’re just behind them, every race. I don’t know what’s going on. We didn’t have the best car in 2010 and we ended up winning the championship in Abu Dhabi. We didn’t have the best car in 2010 and we fought for the championship until the last lap in Brazil. So, the championship is long, but we won’t give up.

Alonso will have to hope for some unexpected events during the race

With Perez’s accident in the first qualifying session in Monte Carlo, which left him at the back of the grid, Alonso admits that any further mistake from Red Bull could help Aston Martin close the gap.

“We will need weekends where Red Bull has problems, like Sergio here, with a DNF or zero points,” explained Alonso. “If Max has one or two of these issues, we will be a little closer in the championship. This is motorsport, anything can happen. But in terms of pace, I don’t think we have the opportunity to do it yet. We won’t give up, that’s for sure.”

The “Bull of Asturias” will have the opportunity to try to put pressure on Red Bull once again this weekend, at home, on the Barcelona circuit.
