Fisichella thinks that Alonso can be world champion again

A lot of time has passed since Fernando Alonso won his two Formula 1 world championships in 2005 and 2006, but his former teammate at Renault, Giancarlo Fisichella, believes that the Aston Martin driver is capable of winning a third title.

Fernando Alonso’s former teammate, Giancarlo Fisichella, believes that the Aston Martin driver can win a third Formula 1 World Championship before retiring. It has already been 17 years since the Spaniard’s last victory in 2006, but Fisichella, who raced alongside Alonso at Renault during his championship years, has supported the 41-year-old man to claim another title.

According to him, the “bull from Asturias” improves with age: “I think Fernando, with a good car, can win another championship,” Fisichella said to Sky Sports News. “Fernando Alonso is getting older, but he’s becoming faster – I don’t know how he does it! Fernando was my teammate in 2005 and 2006. We won the drivers’ and constructors’ championships together for Renault. It was fantastic to work with him. I’m happy for him to be in this form and to be climbing the podium race after race.”

Fisichella acknowledges Aston Martin’s “incredible” progress

Aston Martin has made significant progress for the 2023 season. The team appears capable of fighting for second place in the constructors’ championship, which they currently hold, after finishing the 2022 campaign in seventh place. Since the beginning of the season, out of the 102 points collected by Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso has garnered 75.

Fisichella himself was impressed by the speed at which the team has progressed. “This year, they are really, really strong – the car is so good,” said the Italian. “Especially over the race distance, it seems to be the best car in terms of tire degradation. Aston Martin is an incredible team. They have grown very quickly.”

Alonso is currently seeking his 33rd victory in F1 after achieving four podiums out of five since the beginning of the 2023 season, placing him in third position in the drivers’ standings.

After the cancellation of the Imola Grand Prix, hopes are high for what Aston Martin can achieve in the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix, as they seek to close the gap with championship leaders, Red Bull.
