The drivers did not appreciate the American-style pre-race show in Miami
The show was on point in Miami, especially during the drivers presentation. But many didn't appreciate it, with Lando Norris and George Russell leading the way.

The explosion in popularity that Formula 1 is experiencing has made the United States a key market for its expansion, and judging by the spectacle that was the inaugural Miami Grand Prix in 2022, a similar atmosphere was expected for the return of F1 in 2023.
It was indeed the case, and a new initiative for the second visit of Formula 1 was an introduction on the grid for each driver, complete with an entrance, fireworks, an orchestra, and rapper LL Cool J on the microphone.
Norris wants to stay focused on the grid
However, it is not something that has been well received by many drivers. Lando Norris, for example, stated that no driver likes it, stating that they have a limit to what they can tolerate and that such initiatives push that limit.
« We do a lot of things. It’s probably the only sport where we are so close to the fans, where we do so much promotion. As drivers, we all want to sit down and focus on what we have to do and not do too much television and everything else. It’s a business in the end, so that’s what we have to do. Adding more and more things like that, no driver likes it. »
Norris was joined by another young driver, George Russell. Although he understands the “entertainment” aspect of things, he described this additional show as “distracting” and wouldn’t want it to become a regular occurrence: « We discussed it as drivers on Friday night », he confirmed. « Everyone has a different personality, and I suppose it’s the American way of doing sports. Personally, it’s not for me, it’s my personal opinion, because I’m here to race. I’m not here for the show, but I guess it’s something we have to deal with. I don’t think there’s any other sport in the world where, 30 minutes before going to do your job, all cameras are focused on you to create a bit of a spectacle. »
Only Hamilton sees the positive side
On their side, Red Bull drivers have a more nuanced opinion but it aligns with Norris and Russell’s. Sergio Perez, who finished second in the Miami GP, declared during the post-race press conference that as long as it doesn’t happen too often, it’s not a big deal, while also calling for F1 to remain respectful of the drivers.
Max Verstappen, winner of the Miami GP, however hopes that these presentations will not become a habit for the drivers: Some people like being in the spotlight, others don’t. For me, what they did today is not necessary, I prefer to talk to my engineers and walk to my car, put on my helmet and drive, but of course I understand the value of entertainment. I just hope that this won’t happen every time.
Fernando Alonso, back on the podium, also declared himself not to be a big fan of this kind of thing just before the race.
However, a rare voice has spoken up in favor of these driver presentations, and it is none other than Lewis Hamilton, Russell’s teammate at Mercedes. He confirmed that he fully agrees with such initiatives. “I think it’s a good thing for the sport to constantly develop and evolve, and not just do the same thing as in the past,” he said.
They are trying new things, they are constantly trying to improve the show, and I fully support them. I grew up listening to LL Cool J, and LL Cool J was there. It’s great. You look and you have Will.i.am who is an incredible artist. Serena [Williams] and Venus [Williams] are there. I found it cool.
It is highly likely that all these people will not be present for the next Grand Prix. The drivers can expect a more traditional race preparation when they resume action in Imola for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, in two weeks.
